Hannah Joy King

Having graduated this year with a first class degree in the History and Philosophy of Art, I am beginning my career as an artist with a view to studying an MA in Fine Art next year.

I am 21, I love art, and I love kids.  Much of the youth work I have done has been voluntary, helping at my Church with Creche and children's groups, all the way up to teenagers at the Friday night youth group, Connect.

My paid roles have included work as an Activity leader for the Company, Churchill House Summer Schools, where I enjoyed running art, sport and daytrip activities for kids from 11 to 18 years old.  This required a calm demeanour, and a positive approach to every challenge as many of the kids were far from home, and needed support as well as a smile to help them enjoy the activity, or just take part.

A CONCEPT

Fearless creativity

The years we spend as kids go by super quickly, and developing an inquisitive, confident mind is important to do while we're young so that we are able to make the most of our life.  Allowing kids to confidently create through art gives them a fearlessness to try, and try again, using failure for improvement and motivation - which can be hard even for adults.

Knowing also that every child is unique, I don't attempt to conform kids to a mould of confidence or artistic expression - this is beautiful personal to everyone, and one of the amazing things about my job is that I am able to see the variety of creative minds that kids express.

My sister (left) is adopted, and is currently studying illustration.  Art has been a huge part of both our lives, building confidence and developing fearlessness for the challenges life gives us.
